As the Safety Association
for the upstream petroleum industry in Alberta, the Petroleum
Industry Training Service (PITS) serves as the Certifying
Partner under the Partnerships Program, directed by Alberta
Human Resources and Employment.
As the Certifying Partner, PITS is responsible
for:
- Promoting involvement of employers, associations,
contractors,
organizations and others in Partnerships
- Assisting employers with development, implementation
and evaluation of health and safety programs appropriate
to their needs
- On-going collaboration among stakeholders,
including sharing of
information and expertise surrounding best practices
- Heightening awareness of the importance
of workplace health and safety to employers and worker representatives
To fulfill the above expectations, PITS provides
training on developing, managing and auditing health and safety
programs, and audit review services for companies wishing
to obtain or maintain a Certificate of Recognition (COR) under
the AHRE Partnerships program.
A COR is a formal acknowledgement, issued
jointly by AHRE and PITS to an employer, that the employer
has successfully implemented a basic workplace health and
safety program. In some cases, the COR is also signed by the
appropriate industry Association.
In Alberta, the Workers Compensation Board
(WCB), using a Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) program,
has joined with AHRE and Safety Associations (in this case
PITS) to provide financial incentives to companies who obtain
a COR and show improved safety results (fewer WCB claims)
on a year over year basis. Some companies and groups of companies
have shown dramatic improvement and have received significant
refunds.
