CC Technologies in conjunction with NACE
International conducted a nationwide study on the impact
of corrosion to the U.S. economy. The study presented to
Congress, “Corrosion Costs and Preventive Strategies
in the United States,” estimated that corrosion costs
the U.S. economy $276 billion in direct costs annually, the
equivalent of three percent of the U.S. gross domestic product. “The
Center is intended to be a major research player in the field
of corrosion and materials degradation,” Harstad said.
Dr. Narasi Sridhar has been named director
of the Center. Dr. Sridhar has a Ph.D. in materials engineering
from the University of Notre Dame and over 25 years of experience
in materials and corrosion research involving a broad area
of alloy development, corrosion testing, sensors and prediction.
While DNV has been conducting technology
research for over 50 years, this is the first ever division
of DNV Research & Innovation located outside of Norway.
Dr. Neil Thompson, founder and chairman of the Advisory Boards
of both CC Technologies and the Center says, “Dublin
was a logical choice for the Center due to the capabilities
of CC Technologies and the close proximity of The Ohio State
University, which houses the Fontana Corrosion Center within
their Materials Science and Engineering Department.” As
part of the partnership with Ohio State, DNV is sponsoring
a Corrosion Chair position in the Department of Materials
Science and Engineering. Dr. Gerald S. Frankel has been named
to this position. Dr. Frankel has a doctor of science in
materials science and engineering from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and almost 30 years of experience
in conducting cutting edge research in materials and corrosion.
Industry
faces many challenges due to corrosion including new
processes that push the envelope of our current infrastructure
and technology, such as bio-fuel processing and transportation.
CC Technologies and DNV look forward to working with
Ohio State to perform fundamental research to address these
and other corrosion and materials problems in the U.S.
at the new Materials and Corrosion Research Center. Dr.
Sridhar concluded, “The team of CCT, DNV and Ohio
State brings together some of the top materials and corrosion
scientists in North America to develop innovative solutions
to complex materials and corrosion problems and implement
them in a manner consistent with the overall purpose
of DNV.”
